June

June features the summer solstice, providing the year’s shortest nights, yet offers stunning views of the rising "Summer Triangle" and the spectacular, dense star clouds of the central Milky Way.

Night sky guide June 2027

July

July features the spectacular Milky Way core stretching overhead, the peak of the Delta Aquariids, and prime viewing for the ringed planet Saturn as it nears its annual opposition.

August

August is headlined by the spectacular Perseid meteor shower, while the majestic Summer Triangle hangs directly overhead and the Milky Way’s vibrant galactic centre remains perfectly positioned for late-night viewing.

VISUAL OBSERVING VS SPACE TELESCOPES & PROBES

Space telescopes & probes

Space telescopes & probes

Space telescopes & probes

Images online, whether from the space based or large ground based telescopes are incredible. However there are things to consider about these images, compared to when viewing them through a telescope.

Space/Ground/Probe images are taken with billion-pound equipment, they're at the cutting edge of tech, and have the ability to do days long exposures, they are then edited and have gathered light our eyes can't see (infrared and x-ray). These instruments are more sensitive to light than our eyes and some have been taken outside of Earth's atmosphere.

Viewing objects through a telescope is an incredible and mind blowing experience. It's the most natural, raw way you will see the planets, the moon, stars and anything else that resides amongst our cosmos. These sights are truly inspiring and we never know how it will affect people emotionally, some people cry, some people jump up and down and others have a smile from ear to ear.

Please bare in mind, although you will not see images quite like the space images, what you do see through the telescope will leave you astonished and forever remembering when you first saw them with your own two eyes.

Active Meteor Shower In June

Bootids Meteor Shower 2027

  • Radiant: Constellation Boötes (Look High South-East)
  • Active: 22nd June – 2nd July
  • PEAK: Late night 27th June > Early morning 28th June

Viewing Tips

  1. Find Dark Skies: Light pollution is the biggest enemy of a good show. Get as far away from city lights as possible to capture the fainter meteors.
  2. Check the Moon: In 2027, the Bootids peak during a waning crescent moon (approaching Last Quarter). While not a total blackout, the early evening skies before moonrise will provide the best, darkest backdrop.
  3. Let Your Eyes Adapt: It takes about 20–30 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the dark. Avoid looking at your phone during this time to protect your night vision!
  4. The Best Time: Unlike many showers, the Bootids are often best viewed in the late evening just after twilight but before midnight, which aligns perfectly with the pre-moonrise window this year.

Stargazing Highlights in June 2027

June 2027 brings the arrival of astronomical summer to the UK, offering shorter but highly active nights for stargazing, highlighted by planetary pairings and the highest sun of the year

.

Here are the highlights:

3rd June:

Moon near Venus

(Pre-dawn sky, low in the East)

10th June:

Moon near Regulus

(Evening sky, Southwest)

18th June:

Full "Strawberry" Moon

(Rises in the Southeast at dusk)

21st June:

Summer Solstice

(The longest day and shortest night of the year, marking the official start of summer)

27th June:

June Bootids PEAK

(Best viewed from late evening to midnight)

Perseids Meteor Shower 2027:

Radiant: Constellation Perseus (Look North-East)

Active: 17th July - 24th August

PEAK: 12th August PM -> 13th August AM

Viewing Tips

  1. Find Dark Skies: Light pollution is the biggest enemy of a good show. Get as far away from city lights as possible.
  2. Check the Moon: A full or bright moon can wash out all but the brightest fireballs. In 2027, a Waxing Gibbous Moon (~90% bright) will be present during the peak, so you'll want to target the early morning hours after moonset for the darkest conditions.
  3. Let Your Eyes Adapt: It takes about 20–30 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the dark. Avoid looking at your phone during this time!
  4. The Best Time: Most showers are best viewed between midnight and dawn, as this is when your part of the Earth is rotating directly into the debris path.

Celestial Highlights In July 2027

July 2027 offers a packed night sky calendar, featuring key moon phases, planetary close encounters, meteor showers, and a lunar eclipse.

🌕 Moon Phases & Eclipses

  • July 4 — New Moon (Supermoon): The Moon reaches its closest orbital point to Earth (perigee) during the New Moon phase, making for exceptionally dark skies ideal for stargazing.
  • July 18 — Full Buck Moon & Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: The Full Moon (a Micromoon at its furthest distance) passes through Earth’s outer partial shadow (penumbra). This creates a subtle darkening on the lunar surface rather than a dramatic blood-red shadow.

🪐 Planetary Alignments & Conjunctions

  • 4th July: Mars passes near Uranus.

  • 7th July: The Moon makes a close approach to Saturn and Jupiter.

  • 9th July: Venus aligns close to Regulus (the brightest star in Leo).

  • 10th-11th July: The Moon and Mars glide near the Pleiades star cluster (M45).

  • 13th July: Mars passes near Aldebaran, the bright red eye of Taurus.

  • 17th July: The Moon pairs up near Venus and Regulus.
